PROBES
NEW H-FIELD AND E-FIELD EMI PROBES ARE AVAILABLE

General application note for H-field probes containing basic construction and performance information on the standard E101 Probe.

Application Note

The model E101 Miniature EMI Sniffer™ Probe has been supplemented with four new H-field and two E-field probes.

Application notes for any probes of interest are available upon request by faxing 541-745-3923, or through info (at) bcarsten.com or carsten (at) peak.org. Please include name, mailing address and contact e-mail address or phone number.

H-FIELD PROBES

The new H-field probes all have Faraday shielded 10 turn pickup coils, similar to the E101 probe, but each is designed for a specific application:

Model E201: A micro-miniature probe with a sense coil half the size of that of the E101 probe at 0.030" (750 um) diameter, useful in probing for EMI with small surface-mount components and/or fine lead or conductor spacing.

Model E301: Similar in design to the E101 probe, but with a longer probe shaft of semi-rigid coaxial tubing. This probe can reach further into tight spaces, and may be bent to reach around corners. Available in 6", 9" and 12" nominal lengths.

Model E401: This probe has the sense coil mounted at right angles to the rigid shaft, and can probe for fields normal to a PCB when mounted close to other PCBs or a chassis. Available in 3", 6", 9" and 12" nominal lengths.

Model E501: This "high discrimination" probe has two adjacent coils wound in opposition. Response is minimal to uniform magnetic fields, and is a maximum when directly over an EMI current carrying conductor.

E-FIELD PROBES

The Model E601 and Model E701 E-field probes are designed for a relatively high sensitivity and high resolution respectively. Response is essentially "flat" (proportional to dV/dt) to several GHz when terminated in 50 ohm. Both are available in 3", 6", 9" and 12" nominal lengths.

  • Kit of 5 H-field probes, one of each type: $1,650 (@ 19% discount) (Specify stock lengths of E301 & E401 probes)
  • Kit of 1 each Of 5 H-field and 2 E-field probes: $1,950 (@ 21% discount) (Specify stock lengths of E301, E401, E601 & E701 probes)

Payment:
Visa, Master Card, or American Express, or net 30 days for US companies with faxed, mailed or e-mailed purchase order.

Shipping:
No charge for parcel post to US destinations. Direct shipping costs for FedEx or UPS, or shipped on your account number.

Protective Storage Tubes:
All EMI SnifferTM Probes are shipped in a clear plastic storage tube with end caps. One to three foam plugs (depending on length) hold the probe securely and protect it against shock and vibration. Label(s) identify the probe type, serial number, manufacturer and any other pertinent information.

Carrying Cases:
Protective carrying cases are available for probe kits, or with orders of three or more probes. Cases are blow molded of black high density, polyethylene and foam filled, with the foam cut to hold the probes in place. Cases may be added to probe orders at $75.00 for one case, $140.00 for two cases, or $60.00 each for three or more cases.

Custom Lengths:
The actual length of the probe shaft is typically about 1/10" longer than the nominal length, except for the 2" nominal length, which is actually about 2.4" long. Custom lengths of the longer probes (E301, E401, E601, E701) are available for an additional charge of $150 for one probe, $200 for two probes, or $250 for three or more probes, for probe lengths of 1.5" to 12". For probe lengths from 12" to 24", a further $20 charge per probe applies (standard quantity discounts apply to this length surcharge). Custom lengths of the 2" nominal length probes (E101, E201, E501) are available for an additional charge of $250 for one probe, $300 for two probes, or $350 for three or more probes, for probe lengths of 1.5" to 12". For probe lengths from 12" to 24", a further $20 charge per probe applies (standard quantity discounts apply to this length surcharge).

Conditions:
For probes made to custom lengths, the following conditions apply:

  1. Payment is required upon receipt of order. Payment may be made by check, money order, electronic funds transfer or credit card.
  2. Custom orders are non-cancelable once payment is made and work begins.
  3. Delivery time may be on the order of 2 to 6 weeks. A guaranteed delivery time may be negotiated at the time of order, and will depend on workload at the time.

Custom Probe Designs:
Custom H-field and E-field probes can be designed to the customer's needs. Please contact us with your requirements.
